Replacement of an existing high-voltage (HV) line between Drogenbos and Buizingen
The project involves replacing the existing 2 x 150kV line between the HV substations in Drogenbos and Buizingen. All the current HV pylons along the route will be replaced with similar infrastructure that meets the stringent safety standards applicable today.
The existing line has reached the end of its service life
The existing HV line has reached the end of its service life. To guarantee the reliability of the national grid and the safety of the general public and of the infrastructure in question, we will replace the line between Drogenbos and Buizingen.
The project is part of the Federal Development Plan 2015-2025 approved by the energy minister.
Grid safety and reliability
By investing some €8 million in the power line's replacement, Elia will guarantee the safety and reliability of its grid and infrastructure.
The work will be spread over seven phases:
- Phase 1 – Pruning and removing trees. In some locations along the route, deforestation may be required. That will always be done in consultation with the owners and operators of the land in question.
Phase 2 – Arranging access to the site. After conducting a topographical survey in consultation with the owners and/or operators of the land, provisional access roads will be constructed to enable traffic to reach the site.
Phase 3 – Dismantling the old pylons. The conductors will be removed one by one and immediately rolled up using pulling and braking machines. The pylons will be dismantled and their foundations removed from the soil. The material will be taken away by truck.
Phase 4 – Laying the new foundations. The placement and dimensions of the old foundations will be adapted to the dimensions of the new infrastructure so that concrete foundations can be poured for each pylon. Excavated earth from these foundations will be transported by tipper truck. The new infrastructure will replace the current line.
Phase 5 – Installing the new pylons. The new pylons will be transported to the site by truck. They will be brought there in pieces, locally assembled and then erected. Finally, the cables will be drawn from one end to the other and placed on the metal cross-arms.
Phase 6 – Removing the access roads. Once the work has been completed, the provisional access roads for traffic to and from the site will be removed and the land restored to its original state. Any waste from the site will be collected and taken away to an approved waste treatment plant. Once the work has been completed, a site status report will be drawn up.
Phase 7 – Developing biodiversity. The pylons' feet can be specially designed to limit maintenance costs and strengthen the ecological network. This special manner of construction will be determined together with an external partner, Elia's teams and certain affected parties. As the project progresses, other opportunities may well arise.
